The University Quarter is in Amsterdam city centre, near the Central Station, and is easy to reach. Below is an overview of the various ways of reaching the area. For an exact route description from your point of departure, try or
  • Cycling and bicycle parking

All buildings can be reached by bicycle. Use the cycle route planner to check your route.

  • Current bicycle parking places

Bicycle parking places for students currently can only be found along the streets, with bicycle coaches helping to manage this. Bicycle parking places for staff can be found under building BG3 and on Oudezijds Achterburgwal (under the Oudemanhuispoort building).

    Future bicycle parking spaces

Starting in 2022, more underground bicycle parking spaces should become available to staff and students, if all goes well. The first extra bicycle parking spaces will be under the new University Library.
In principle, in developing the University Quarter (to be completed in 2025), all parking spaces have been planned to be underground, for both staff and students. The entrances to these underground facilities have been planned to be located on the perimeter of the University Quarter, creating an interior area with few bicycles.

  • Train

Amsterdam Central Station is the closest railway station. Walking to the University Quarter takes about 15-20 minutes, and there are also trams and metros from Central Station stopping nearby. If you travel via Amsterdam Amstel railway station, your only direct public transport option is the metro, but changing via several trams is also possible.

See for your current travel route.

  • Tram: lines 4-14 and 1-2-5

It takes about six minutes by tram (lines 4 or 14) from the Amsterdam Central railway station to the Rokin stop, with UvA buildings just a few minutes' walk away from there.

Another option is taking either line 1, 2 or 5 and getting off at the Spui stop on Spuistraat, which is slightly farther away than the Rokin stop.

  • Metro: 51-52-53-54

For buildings at the northern end of the University Quarter (Bushuis, Oost-Indisch huis, Spinhuis and the Agnietenkapel), the nearest metro station is Nieuwmarkt (south exit: Nieuwe Hoogstraat and Snoekjessteeg), taking metro lines 51, 53 or 54. From there, it is a few minutes' walk to the campus.

Buildings on the eastern and southern side of the University Quarter, such as BG 1, 2 and 3, can also be easily reached by metro line 52 (Noord/Zuidlijn), Rokin station. Another option for reaching these buildings is to take metros stopping at Nieuwmarkt station (south exit: Nieuwe Hoogstraat and Snoekjessteeg) or at Waterlooplein station (north exit: Waterlooplein).

  • By car and parking

Much of the University Quarter can be reached by car, although the buildings around the Binnengasthuis premises and on Rokin can only be accessed between 07:00 and 11:00, and only for drop-offs and pick-ups.

Street parking spaces are very limited in number, with the regular city centre parking zone (Zone Centrum) hourly parking rates applying. The UvA does not offer any parking spaces. The closest car parks are the Stopera and the Bijenkorf. If you would like to park for longer at a cheaper rate, use a P + R car park outside the city centre and continue your journey using public transport.
