Between 2011 and 2014, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) commissioned the construction company BAM to complete the renovation of REC BCD. Part of this renovation included the replacement of the building façade. However, after completion, leakages were identified, causing inconvenience and disruption. On 29 January 2024, the UvA and BAM initiated a pilot for restoration of the façade.
  • Our ambition
    South façade of building B

During the pilot, the contractor will restore and test a section of the south façade of building B (see image), covering an area of approximately 500 m2. Comprehensive tests on water leakage, potential noise disruption during the work and the impact on the use of teaching spaces and workspaces in this part of the building will be conducted during and after this restoration. These tests will determine whether additional measures such as alternative teaching spaces are necessary or if an alternative approach is required for the complete restoration. If the pilot is evaluated positively, work on the other sections of the façade will be carried out next, depending on progress and weather conditions.

  • Timeline

According to the current timetable, the pilot is expected to conclude by the end of March 2024. Depending on the evaluation, a timetable for the other sections of the façade of BCD will be established. The pilot work is scheduled only on weekdays, starting at 07:00 a.m. and concluding around 16:00 p.m.
