In September, maintenance work will be taking place in three areas on campus. Renovation work will be carried out on the roofs of Buildings A and G, and work on the abutments for the bridge will be completed.

Faculty of Law, Building A

Renovation work on the roof

From 5 September to mid-November, renovation work will be carried out on the roofs of the 1st, 3rd, 11th and 13th floors. The current roof covering will be removed and replaced with a new one. A new layer of insulation will also be installed. This work is expected to last until mid-October. After that, the contractor will continue to finish off the roofs until mid-November. The moss/sedum roof will be installed in 2017.

Building A

Sawing work

From 31 August to 7 September, three openings will be cut in the first-floor roof. Windows will be installed here so as to let natural light into the hall.

Delivery of materials and lifting work

On Monday 5 September, the materials for the roof will be delivered. On Tuesday 6 September, a large 150-tonne crane will lift the materials onto the roofs. The crane will return a week later for the remainder of the lifting work. The crane will be located on Building A’s construction site, directly behind the gate.

Pile driving

In early September, three foundation piles will be driven between the Van Tienhoven Building and Building A. The piles will support the new fire escape. The pile driving is not expected to take longer than four hours. The piles will then be filled with concrete. A concrete mixer will be present on Roetersstraat on that day. As soon as we know when the pile driving will take place, we will post a news item on the website.

How will this affect you?

Some noise nuisance may occur during the cutting work for the openings in the roof and the pile driving. The contractor will use noise barriers to limit the inconvenience to a minimum. The other work on the roof is not expected to cause much nuisance. The crane will only lift loads above the construction site and not above Roetersstraat. We do not expect these activities to cause any hindrance or restrict passage on Roetersstraat.

Restructuring of outdoor areas

Work on completing the abutments (supports) for the bridge will continue throughout September. The abutments will be complete in early October, just in time for the bridge which will be delivered in parts on 8 October. We do not expect the work on the abutments to cause much nuisance.

Abutments

Entrance to Buildings D and E

From 5-9 September, concrete will be laid and a goods lift will be installed in the vestibule of the entrances to Buildings D and E. This work may cause some inconvenience. The doors will remain in use.

Psychology building, Building G

The roof of Building G will be renovated. Scaffolding will be erected around the building so as to ensure that the workmen can work safely. The erection and dismantling of the scaffolding will take place in phases. The schedule for the roof renovations and the erection and dismantling of the scaffolding will depend on the weather. The work may be delayed if there is hot weather, storms or heavy rain. The days on which the scaffolding will be erected and dismantled will be published on the website and on the screens in the building. Throughout the month, a crane will be stationed along Nieuwe Prinsengracht to lift materials onto the roof. Two traffic wardens will be on hand to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists. The roof renovation is expected to last until 21 October.
