In October, renovation work will continue on Building G on Nieuwe Prinsengracht and on the re-landscaping of the outdoor area. Please find details of the work and any inconvenience it may cause below.

Future location of the Faculty of Law (Building A, Roetersstraat 15)

In the coming period, work will be carried out on the canal sides of Nieuwe Achtergracht near Building A. This will include installation of sheet piling. This is necessary to be able to construct waterside steps in the future and the new bridge over Nieuwe Achtergracht. We expect to carry out the work on the canal sides in the next two months. Arcadis, the principal contractor, is currently planning and organising the work, but it is taking a little longer than expected. As soon as we have more certainty about the procedure and dates for the work, we will inform you through this website and in a community bulletin.

Architectural survey

Construction work could have implications for buildings in the immediate vicinity. For this reason, before commencing a project, the radius in which buildings and infrastructure need to be extensively assessed is determined. Therefore, for the installation of the sheet piling, a number of buildings in the vicinity will be assessed as part of an 'architectural survey'. During an architectural survey, the condition of a building will be accurately recorded through photos and accompanying text. This means that once our work has been completed, it can be determined whether it actually caused any damage. Hanselman Expertise will carry out these surveys before work gets under way on the canal sides. The residents of the affected buildings have already received a letter about this.

Maintenance work on the future Psychology Department (Building G, Nieuwe Prinsengracht 130)

The listed Building G on Nieuwe Prinsengracht will undergo a thorough refurbishment until the end of the year in order to make it suitable for the Psychology Department of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

In the month of October, work will mainly be carried out on the ceilings and walls. We will be working from top to bottom, which means that the floor covering will be laid on the third floor within in a few weeks. Lightning conductors will also be fitted. This will require the use of an elevating work platform.

Occasionally, it will be necessary to work on Saturdays, when work will mainly be carried out indoors. Working hours on Saturdays are between 08:00 and 16:00. Materials will not be delivered or removed on Saturdays but only during the week.

At the beginning of October, groups of staff from the Psychology Department will have the opportunity to take a tour of the building. They will be able to see the progress of the work and get acquainted with the future workplaces.

Outdoor areas

In June 2014, work got under way to tackle the outdoor areas with the aim of making them attractive for students, staff, local residents and visitors. The outdoor areas on campus will be re-landscaped and below-ground work will be carried out on pipes and cables.

Work being carried out on the Green Nose will be completed this month. Except for some minor paving work, the work on Nieuwe Prinsengracht and Nieuwe Achtergracht alongside the Lab (Building L) has been completed. The route has been reopened for traffic. The number of bicycle parking spaces along Nieuwe Prinsengracht has been increased by installing bicycle 'brackets' and new seating areas have been created. The green area at the head of Nieuwe Prinsengracht is also nearing completion. New seating areas have also been created here.

Next phase

In late October, work will commence on the next phase of the renovation of public space on the campus. We will start with the area by the barrier between Valckenierstraat and Nieuwe Achtergracht. This is a logical place to start because the sewer and water mains need renewing and the lowest point of the sewer system is located on the border of the campus on Valckenierstraat.
A summary of the overall phasing of the work in the outdoor areas will soon be posted on this website including a detailed schedule.

Felling trees

In order to re-landscape this area as specified in the design of Inside Outside landscape architects, a number of trees need to be felled. This will be carried out before the work commences. A permit to fell these trees was requested and granted in 2014. New trees will be planted to replace them to coincide with the planting season.

Diversions

The work in this area will last for about four weeks. Diversions will be in place during this period. Alternative routes will be posted on this website and in a community bulletin once the schedule is known. All buildings will remain accessible and we will try to keep the alternative routes as short as possible.
