In May, we will continue the work on buildings A, E and G and the re-landscaping of the outdoor areas. Below you will find details of the work and any inconvenience or nuisance it may cause.

Building A, Roetersstraat 15, future building of the Faculty of Law

The tallest part of building A, the tower, is finished. All the façades are ready and the internal work assigned to the current contractor has been completed. In the low part of the building and the passage (which will become the hallway), the last frames and cladding panels are being fitted.

Dismantling the construction site

The departing contractor will start dismantling the construction site at the end of May. A number of fences are being brought down, for example next to the Library Learning Centre. This is necessary because the contractor will be dismantling the construction platform in July. The fences will probably not be put back up. The site office will therefore also be dismantled in the first week of June and will not be put back up either. It is possible that there will be noise nuisance due to the dismantling of the site office and the removal of the sheets and poles from the platform over the canal.

You can find a weekly schedule for work on building A here. It is a provisional schedule and may change due to a variety of factors.

Office refitting in Building E, Roetersstraat 11, Faculty of Economics and Business

Relocations

Following the completion of the renovation at the end of March, some of the staff moved back to their workplace. The teaching rooms in this part of the building are also back in use. Some of the floors in the highest tower on building E are now ready for their new occupants. The CREED Lab will be the first to move in, in mid-April and May. It will be followed by the back office of the Student Service Desk, which will move into this renovated section.

Plastering and painting

A lot of work will be done in the coming months on updating the climate control, electrics and data cables on floors where work has not yet been completed in the white E1 and E2 towers. Plastering and painting work is also taking place. During the next few months, the grand staircase in the hall of building E and the Library Learning Centre at Roetersstraat 11 will be removed. Desks will be constructed for the Student Service Desk and the book store run by SEFA (the study association of the Faculty of Economics and Business).

Crane for building E

A mobile crane will sometimes be needed to remove rubble and deliver construction materials to building E2. We are scheduling this to take place on consecutive days to keep disruption to a minimum. On these days there will be extra construction traffic, so there will always be a traffic supervisor on site. We expect to complete renovations in the building E towers by the start of the 2015/2016 academic year. Most of the work will be carried out indoors. We do not expect it to cause much inconvenience to occupants working in the vicinity, however.

Re-landscaping outdoor area at Nieuwe Prinsengracht and Nieuwe Achtergracht

New cables, pipes and paving

The outdoor areas on the campus will be re-landscaped and underground work will be carried out on pipes and cables. The old paving will be replaced in line with a design made by Bureau Inside Outside. We will also create extra meeting areas.

In April, the contractor will be re-landscaping Nieuwe Prinsengracht, alongside building G and on the Green Nose, the green area at the end of Nieuwe Prinsengracht. Due to renovations, no teaching will be taking place in building G. The rooms in this building are directly next to the ARCADIS work area. We therefore expect that users will not be disturbed.

x

Diversions

Due to the work activities on the public space, diversions will be in place. The diversions are marked on the maps of the campus.

It has been taken into account in planning the work that there will be a certain degree of pollution in the subsurface. The construction workers will therefore have to take special safety measures so that they are able to work there. In addition, no gangway may be created in the work area. The work area is therefore fenced off.

Pedestrians and cyclists can safely go past these fences over the Green Nose to and from Plantage Muidergracht. Pedestrians and cyclists can reach the entrance of the REC BCD, REC E and the Lab by following Nieuwe Achtergracht next to the CREA.

Bike stands out of use

The work on Nieuwe Prinsengracht means that some bike stands are temporarily out of use. The bike shelter under building E can be used. There are plenty of spaces there where you can park your bike.

Renovation of offices and teaching rooms in Building G, Nieuwe Prinsengracht, Psychology

From March to December 2015, Building G will be thoroughly refurbished in order to make it suitable for the Psychology department of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The building will come into use at the beginning of 2016.

Asbestos abatement is currently being prepared in the building. This is due to a low level of asbestos which must be removed before the contractor starts renovation work. In the first weeks of May, the construction site for the contractor will be set up in the centre of the grounds between buildings E and G/L.  In areas where asbestos is not being removed, the contractor will begin work. Building G will come into use at the start of 2016.

x

Cyclists and pedestrians

The area between buildings E, G and L will be busy with pedestrians, cyclists, suppliers and construction traffic. In the interest of everyone’s safety, contractors will be putting traffic regulators into work when a crane must be used or when there is a lot of traffic. Paths for pedestrians and cyclists will also be marked out in the area.
