Among the projects forming part of the University Quarter development is the major renovation and upgrade of the Oudemanhuispoort (OMHP), a set of buildings with a gross floor area (GFA) of approximately 18,000 m2. Oudemanhuispoort features a number of characteristic building sections. Over the years, various building sections and buildings have been connected with one another, creating an array of buildings.

Functions and facilities

The OMHP is in use as a UvA teaching location for education particularly of the Faculty of Humanities (FGw). The building is also used by the UvA departments Facility Services and ICTS, AdHoc vacancy management, Humanities Venture Lab (FGw) and temporarily for student housing. There is a catering facility in the reception hall.

Challenge

The current building structure is difficult to understand, the routing is unclear, and the appearance of the different sections do not do justice to the historic buildings' age-old features. In order to fit all the programme elements into the building and improve its structure, the Master Plan outlined a proposal to partially demolish sections and then rebuild these (a total of approximately 7,500 m2 GFA in the non-historic building sections). This will be further developed during the design phase.
