The University Quarter is the historical home of the University of Amsterdam and is located in the centre of Amsterdam, between Oudezijds Voorburgwal, Oude Hoogstraat, Kloveniersburgwal, Oude Turfmarkt and Nieuwe Doelenstraat. It is at the very heart of the city and is therefore used by a wide variety of people, who use both the UvA locations, the outdoor space and the surrounding homes, businesses and facilities.

The area, which between now and 2025 will undergo a major transformation, will accommodate the related study programmes of the Faculty of Humanities on a single location, together with UvA-wide functions such as museums, a theatre and the future conference facilities and administrative headquarters. This will encourage interaction between students, staff, the university and the surrounding area.

Who will use the University Quarter?

Students and staff of the UvA will be the largest group of users. The University Quarter is currently home to the Faculty of Humanities, the Allard Pierson, the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), the University Theatre, VOX-POP, the Venture Lab and Amsterdam Academische Club. By 2025 there will also be room for high-profile UvA debating and conference facilities and the administrative headquarters and its staff will also relocate to the city centre. Education and research is also a natural draw for businesses, research and knowledge institutions and entrepreneurs and vice versa, e.g. the Humanities Cluster of the KNAW (the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences).

Other key players in this area are residents from the local area. The UvA is also offering temporary student accommodation, which brings a new group of residents to the area.
Being in the city centre, clearly there are also many businesses, shops, food and drink outlets and hotels in the vicinity. The people of Amsterdam also use the area, as do commuters and tourists.

Master plan

In order to ensure that the University Quarter fits in well with the surrounding area, Amsterdam as a whole and other users, a Master Plan is being drawn up. Based on internal and external input and on the recommendations of urban design and landscape architects West 8, this will define the ideal layout of the buildings and the surrounding outdoor space. This plan will ensure that the University Quarter remains future proof, for all users. Read more about the Master Plan.

Impression

In early 2018, the University Quarter was known as the 'City Center Campus'. In this film there is not yet talked about the City Center Campus, but it does give an impression of what is no longer topical at the University Quarter. The film is in Dutch, but you can toggle the English translation in Youtube.

Other UvA campuses

As well as the University Quarter, there are other campuses in the city: Roeterseiland, Amsterdam Science Park and Amsterdam UMC. There are also a number of UvA buildings in the city outside of these campuses. You can find more information on this in ‘the city as campus’.
