Plantage Muidergracht 24
Building REC P is being renovated and adapted to today’s requirements: future-proof, sustainable and energy-efficient. Watch the clip to see how we are doing this (available in Dutch only).
Since the 2023-2024 academic year, the Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics, Amsterdam Business School & UvA Academy (contract teaching) programmes have been part of REC P.
Students and staff at REC P can now make use of, among other things:
Due to an increasing shortage of teaching space and study workspaces, combined with the outdated state of the building, REC P had to be thoroughly renovated. In order to improve the connection with the rest of the campus, the entrance was moved so that it is closer to the bridge to Roeterseiland.
By locally breaking open the floor, a void was created in the reception hall, which strengthens the public character of the building and where a light artwork hangs. In the new, spacious entrance hall there is a reception desk and coffee bar. A new elevator makes the more public parts of the building, such as the conference center, lecture hall and meeting rooms on the various floors, accessible to everyone. Open spaces have been created throughout the building, with glass doors and large windows so that a lot of natural light enters the building.
Materials from the former REC P have been reused as much as possible in the building. Building materials from other demolition and dismantling projects have also been used. For example, we reuse window frames, hardwood stairs, wood floor panels, concrete roof tiles and fixtures, and old doors that have been sawed up into planks are used as acoustic panelling.
A green roof has also been installed on the REC P building, which absorbs rainwater through the buffering of water in the plants, substrate and drainage layer. It slows down run-off to the sewage mains, purifies the rainwater and enables evaporation through the plants. This keeps the groundwater level stable and reduces the peak load on the sewage mains. A green roof also makes for cleaner air. In addition, a green roof provides a sound barrier around the building.
In the first half of the 20th century, Roeterseiland was used as a tram depot, among other things. Due to the higher student numbers, the UvA built new buildings in the 1960s. One of those new buildings was the Euclid building, known to us as REC P. The faculties of the exact sciences were located on Roeterseiland, until they moved to the newest campus, Amsterdam Science Park, in 2010. Amongst others, fhe Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences have since settled on Roeterseiland.
