To solve congestion at the main entrance to REC ABC on the Nieuwe Achtergracht, REC C will get an extra entrance. This will create a direct walking route between the REC ABC, REC V and REC JK buildings. As the new entrance will also be close to REC BC's bicycle basement, this will also allow better use of that facility.
Experience and research show that congestion often occurs at the current entrance. Therefore, research was carried out into possible locations for an additional entrance. Simulations were also carried out in this study. The research also showed that upgrading the emergency exit in REC C to a full-fledged side entrance is the best option for an extra entrance, as this location best spreads the flows and has the greatest effect of reducing congestion at the main entrance. Other possible locations were the corridor at LAW Hub and a modification of the current entrance to REC ABC. This was not chosen because it would create too much of a change to the facade. The entrance will be opposite the current entrance for suppliers of REC I and CREA.
The current passage is an emergency exit. The modification must take into account that the new passage can handle the same amount of people. Therefore, a revolving door was chosen at this spot. On the outside of the building, the stairs will be altered, lighting will be installed and the entrance will have a sign with the UvA logo and building designations. Between the new entrance at REC ABC and the supplier entrance to REC I and CREA.
