Including update on work on UvA’s Roeterseiland Campus
18 May 2022
Start of work
Now that the permit has been issued, the UvA and construction contractor De Meeuw will be setting to work on constructing the additional teaching building by the start of the new academic year. Work geared towards putting in the foundations will start on Monday, 16 May. This will entail earthwork being carried out, followed by so-called screw injection piles being put in. These differ from classic piles in that they can be installed in a corkscrew motion quietly and without vibration, minimising noise nuisance in the vicinity.
Continuation of work on REC V building
Once the foundations have been put in and connections to pipes and the sewerage system have been completed, the construction work will get under way. This will encompass the previously mentioned transportation of the units as well as installation of the stairwells, lift, etc. Once the units are on the ground floor, work on the electrics, sewerage, sanitary facilities and climate systems (such as heating and air conditioning) will commence there. They will then work upwards to the top floor. The final work to be carried out in the building will be to lay the flooring, put in the doors and then clean the building prior to handover.
Update work on REC JK building
In consultation with the intended contractor, the UvA has decided to postpone some work on REC JK that could potentially cause a degree of noise nuisance. This work had been scheduled for summer 2022. It will now be carried out at a different time, at which REC JK will be out of use temporarily (with the exception of storage and certain ICT work). A temporary, substitute flexi-space will be set up over that period in consultation with the users. The contractor will commence the work that can be done while the building is still in use at the end of July.
Work outside
Some work is also going to be done around REC JK and Plot V over the next few months. For example, additional parking spaces will be created on the car park adjacent to REC JK. This is necessary because some of the current parking spaces between REC BC and Plot V are going to disappear temporarily. A ground cable will also be put in between REC JK and Plot V. This will make it necessary to divert bicycle and pedestrian traffic for a while. Signs and traffic controllers will be used for this.
