On Thursday, 16 October, the European Steel Design Award for sustainability was presented in Istanbul. The winner: our very own LAB42 at Science Park. The jury praised the building for its energy-neutral, fully demountable structure, which ensures long-term flexibility and sustainability. This award is a fine sequel to LAB42’s win of the Dutch National Steel Prize in 2024.

LAB42: energy-neutral and long-term flexible

LAB42 is a multifunctional 14,000 m² building for the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam, housing institutes focused on Informatics and Artificial Intelligence.

The building fosters collaboration with industry and features a modular design that combines wood, glass, steel and 3D-printed elements to create a transparent and innovative appearance.

Inside, a bright atrium, open walkways and a variety of workspaces create a dynamic and well-organised environment. The building is divided into three zones – from quiet concentration to interactive exploration – encouraging interdisciplinary exchange.

Its energy-neutral, fully demountable structure ensures long-term flexibility and sustainability. Thanks to natural ventilation, abundant greenery and clear signage, LAB42 provides a healthy and inspiring environment for working and learning at the heart of the campus.

Collaboration with innovative partners

This award is thanks in part to the partners with whom we were able to realise LAB42. First, the sustainable and circular design by Benthem Crouwel Architects, Strackee Bouwadviesbureau, installation consultant Deerns and engineering and consultancy firm DGMR. And second, the future-proof construction carried out by Visser & Smit Bouw in collaboration with Kropman Installatietechniek. They delivered the 100% reusable steel structure, which can be easily adapted and reconfigured to accommodate future changes.
