The comic book is a relatively unknown phenomenon in the academic world.  Yet in recent years academics are making increasing use of the comic strip and its associated idiom to convey information: doctoral theses and academic papers have been published in comic strip form, and the graphic novel has gained increasing recognition as a serious art form in Literary Studies, for example.

A range of these graphic publications have found their way into academic institutes and libraries, so this is a good time to explore just what is out there.

Allard Pierson Museum

The Allard Pierson heritage library, part of the University Library, has a large collection of comic strips which is being managed and further expanded by curator Jos van Waterschoot. This pop-up exhibition contains a selection from this impressive collection.

A reappreciation of the ‘graphic novel’ and its place in Academia and the Cultural Zeitgeist

The texts for this exhibition were lettered by hand by Frits Jonker, a comic letterer who has over forty years of experience and who has worked on countless comic strip texts. He is also a fanatic publisher of peripheral affairs and founder of the Tijdreisbureau (“Time Travel Agency“).
