We will start work on the Roeterseiland Campus again in January 2016. Work will be carried out at three locations in the outdoor areas, on one canal wall of Nieuwe Achtergracht (in front of Building A) and on the roof of Building E. Lorries will also be delivering furniture to the campus as part of the renovation work to Building G. In this monthly bulletin, you can read about the work we will be carrying out and what inconvenience it may cause.
In June 2014, work was started on the outdoor areas with the aim of making them attractive for students, staff, local residents and visitors. The outdoor areas on the campus are being re-landscaped and below-ground work is now being carried out on pipes and cables. The water supply and sewers will be renewed and a number of trees will be felled. New paving will be laid and replacement trees planted. On our website www.campus.uva.nl/buitenruimte-rec, you can see what the outdoor areas will look like once the work is complete.
The canal walls of Nieuwe Achtergracht need to be reinforced in order to build a new bridge and stairs here at a later date. This work is expected to last until mid-February. Work will be carried out from pontoons in the canal.
Work started in December to encase the air-conditioning system on Building E will continue. Work will be carried out on 8 January and the contractor will return for one or two days later this month. As soon as we know which days, we will inform you via the website.
The site office at Building G will be removed on 8 January. The new furniture for the future Psychology Department (Building G) will be delivered to the campus from 11 January in lorries via Nieuwe Prinsengracht.
Due to the works, it will not be possible to park your bike along Nieuwe Achtergracht next to Building H from 7 January. Also from this date, the bicycle parking facility under Building E will only be accessible from the area in front of Building E.
There are ample bicycle parks available along Nieuwe Prinsengracht in front of Building G and additional racks will be installed between Buildings J/K and CREA.
Scooters that normally use the below-ground parking facility can also park along Nieuwe Prinsengracht in front of Building G.
The cycle traffic wardens will direct you to the parking spaces and additional signage will be put up to point the way.
The passage between Nieuwe Prinsengracht and Nieuwe Achtergracht (between Buildings E and G/L) will be closed from 7 January.
The area in front of CREA will be narrower from 11 January and for this reason it will temporarily not be permitted to cycle there. The entrance to CREA, however, will remain accessible.
All working areas will be fenced off during this period. Alternative routes will be signposted.
One particular part of the work being carried out is lowering an underground cable tunnel running between Buildings E and G. This will take approximately three weeks to complete. Two days have been set aside for cutting into the concrete top of the tunnel, which will create noise nuisance. We will inform you which two days via the website as soon as this is known.
Installing the new sheet piling itself will not cause any noise nuisance. You can see how sheet piling is installed in this film.
Delivering and removing materials and equipment, operating machinery and manoeuvring cranes will be audible and may cause some nuisance.
Due to the delivery of materials and machinery, Roetersstraat will be busier than normal from 7 January. However, traffic controllers will be in place to optimise the traffic flow.
Lorries for the work areas between the Buildings E and G will travel from Roetersstraat along Nieuwe Achtergracht and Building H. The route will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists. Lorries will be directed by traffic wardens. Two zebra crossings will be laid: one for pedestrians heading from Building E to Buildings B/C or towards CREA and one for those walking from Building E via the Lab towards the Green Nose.
We will provide more in-depth information about the specific works and associated implications from 4 January. You can find all the latest news on our website or follow us on twitter at twitter@roeterseiland.
We ask for your understanding, cooperation and patience at those times when you have to wait a bit longer or park a little further away. Please follow the instructions of bicycle and traffic wardens – they are there to help you.
We wish you a happy New Year.
