In November, renovation work will continue on Building G on Nieuwe Prinsengracht and on the re-landscaping of the outdoor area. Please find details of the work and any inconvenience it may cause below.

Outdoor area

In June 2014, work got under way to tackle the outdoor areas with the aim of making them attractive for students, staff, local residents and visitors. The outdoor areas on campus will be re-landscaped and below-ground work will be carried out on pipes and cables. On 4 November, the contractor will start work on the southern half of the campus, between Nieuwe Achtergracht and Valckenierstraat, beginning with the street with the barrier by Building J/K. The water supply and sewerage will be renewed and a number of trees will be felled. New paving will be laid and replacement trees planted. Here you can see how the outside areas will look once the work is complete.

Felling trees

In order to complete the design of the outdoor areas on the Roeterseiland Campus, a number of trees in this area need to be felled. A permit for this was approved in 2014. In order to keep noise nuisance to a minimum, the trees will be removed from the campus before being shredded. New trees will be planted at a later stage to make the finished area attractive.

Works to the water supply and sewerage

The water and sewage pipes will be replaced. The soil here has been contaminated, therefore the contractor will carry out ground remediation. For this reason, and to ensure safety, the work area will be fenced off. Access will be restricted except for the contractor's employees. The works to the water supply and sewerage are not expected to cause any noise nuisance.

Works to cables and pipes

After the works to the water supply and sewerage have been completed, the street will be repaved with temporary paving since this route still needs to be used by lorry traffic connected with other work around the campus. If the final paving surface were laid right away, it would suffer damage from this traffic.

Temporary diversions

The work described above will take approximately four weeks. During this period, diversions will be in place for all traffic in the area between Building J/K and Building B/C. Pedestrians and cyclists should use the circular route past the emergency exit for Building B/C and CREA (see Map 1). During this period, lorries and vans with deliveries for the UvA will have to use the route alongside the parking facilities on Valckenierstraat (see Map 2). All bicycle parking spaces will remain available. A traffic warden will be present to direct drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

You can find the latest news on the work around the campus and notice of any changes at www.campus.uva.nl.
