Future location of the Faculty of Law (Building A, Roetersstraat 15)

Dismantling the construction site

The departing contractor has nearly finished dismantling the construction site next to Building A on Roetersstraat. In the second half of 2015, work will be carried out on the canal sides of the Nieuwe Achtergracht and below ground. The exact schedule for this work is not yet known. We will keep you updated on this website.

You can find a weekly schedule for work on building A  here. It is a provisional schedule and may change due to a variety of factors.

New contractor

The second construction phase will start in February 2016. We expect to be able to announce the new contractor at the end of July. The contractor will first be given a so-called verification period, in which he can familiarise himself with the building and all diagrams and calculations.

Renovation of the offices at the Faculty of Economics and Business (Building E, Roetersstraat 11)

Renovations are still being carried out in the highest two white towers on Roetersstraat which will accommodate staff offices. This work will be completed before 1 September 2015.

During July, work will be carried out on the ICT, modernisation of the lighting and the installation of a security alarm system in the building. Work will also be carried out in the central hall of Building E and in the Library Learning Centre. The desks for the Student Service Desk and SEFA (the study association of the FEB)  will be completed, giving them a new, prominent location in the hall of the building.

During this work there will be a mobile scaffold tower in the hall and the lighting will  be out of service for a short while. The employee workspace will be blocked off and a safe walking route will be provided through the hall.

Renovation of the future Psychology department (Building G, Nieuwe Prinsengracht 130)

From March to December 2015, Building G on Nieuwe Prinsengracht will be thoroughly refurbished in order to make it suitable for the Psychology department of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The psychologists will move into their new accommodation in the monumental building at the beginning of next year.

The work to prepare the building for use involved some demolition work, including asbestos removal. This additional asbestos removal work is necessary because some remnants of asbestos were found in the building during recent demolition work. This additional material must be dismantled and removed. The additional removal will take place on two Saturdays (27 June and 4 July). Traffic will also be guided while this work is being carried out.

x
New floor finishing and ceilings for Building G, making it ready for the arrival of the psychologists at the beginning of 2016.

Crane at Buildings E and G

A mobile crane is sometimes needed to remove rubble and deliver construction materials at buildings E and G. There will be additional construction-related traffic on these days.

The lifting activities will always be supervised by a traffic supervisor of the contractor involved. We expect to complete renovations in the Building E towers and the hall by the start of the 2015/2016 academic year.

Re-landscaping outdoor area at Nieuwe Prinsengracht and Nieuwe Achtergracht

New cables, pipes and paving

The outdoor areas on the campus will be re-landscaped and underground work will be carried out on pipes and cables. The old paving will be replaced in line with a design made by Bureau Inside Outside and more meeting places will be created.

The work on Nieuwe Prinsengracht, alongside Building G, is progressing smoothly. Work will commence on the Green Nose, the green area at the head of Nieuwe Prinsengracht, in the first week of July. From 7 July, work will commence on the underground cables and pipes at Nieuwe Achtergracht. All work at Nieuwe Prinsengracht and Nieuwe Achtergracht is expected to be completed before the start of the 2015-2016 academic year.

Cables and pipes will be replaced in several places on Roeterseiland.

Diversions

Nieuwe Achtergracht will be temporarily inaccessible from the two bridges on the Lab side due to work on the public space. Diversions are in place and marked on the campus maps.

A certain degree of soil pollution was taken into account when planning the work. The construction workers must therefore take special safety measures when working there. In addition, passage across the work area is prohibited and the work area has been fenced off.

Pedestrians and cyclists are diverted via safe routes alongside the fencing over the Green Nose to and from Plantage Muidergracht. Pedestrians and cyclists can reach the entrance of REC BCD, REC E and the Lab by following Nieuwe Achtergracht on the CREA side. The routes over Nieuwe Prinsengracht and Nieuwe Achtergracht should be re-operational in mid-August. Click on the map below to see the temporary routes over Roeterseiland.

Safety of users

The area between Buildings E, G and L is used intensively by pedestrians, cyclists, suppliers and construction traffic. To ensure everyone’s safety, the contractors will deploy traffic regulators at times when cranes are being used or when a lot of traffic is expected, for example. The pedestrian and cycle paths in this area have been marked.
