The entire month of February will be dedicated to activities in the outdoor area and the quays of the Nieuwe Achtergracht canal. We are going to install new sheet piling along the canal and put in a temporary “crossing pontoon” in the canal. Please find details of the work and any inconvenience it may cause below.
In February, we will be working on the outdoor area between the Buildings E and G, along the Nieuwe Prinsengracht canal and in front of CREA. The outdoor areas on the campus are being re-landscaped and below-ground work is being carried out on pipes and cables. The water supply and sewers will be renewed and where necessary, we will remove contaminated soil. New paving will also be laid and new lighting installed. In this way, we will make the outdoor area on campus attractive for students, employees, local residents and visitors. A number of areas on campus are now ready.
The canal walls of Nieuwe Achtergracht need to be reinforced. This is necessary in order to build a new bridge and stairs here at a later date. The entire month of February will be needed to install the sheet piling. We will start on the south side (side of Building A) and will then continue on the north side (side of Building H). Work will be carried out from pontoons in the canal. The material will be supplied via Roetersstraat and the southern quay in front of Building A. This building site will not be accessible to unauthorised persons.
The platform over the Nieuwe Achtergracht canal that connects Buildings B/C and E/H will be removed shortly. This is necessary to be able to remove the concrete base under the platform in the canal. To be able to still cross the canal, we will place a ‘crossing pontoon’ in the canal at the spot where the bicycle pontoons are currently located. These will be relocated a little further down the canal. As soon as we know when the ‘crossing pontoon’ will be taken into use and the platform will be removed, we will post a news item on the website.
Due to the work to be done on the canal, it will no longer be possible to park bicycles on Nieuwe Achtergracht alongside Building H. The bicycle parking facility under Building E will be accessible once again via Nieuwe Achtergracht on 8 February at the latest.
Because of this work, the route via Nieuwe Prinsengracht to the parking facility under Building E will be closed until the end of May. The bicycle and scooter parking spaces in front of Building G are only accessible via Nieuwe Achtergracht. The cycle traffic wardens will direct you to the parking spaces.
The passage between Nieuwe Prinsengracht and Nieuwe Achtergracht (between Buildings E and G) will be closed until the end of May. The entrance to Building G is accessible via Nieuwe Achtergracht.
The entrance to CREA will be narrower until the end of March and for this reason it will temporarily not be permitted to cycle there. The entrance to CREA, however, will remain accessible.
Installing the sheet piling itself will not cause any noise nuisance. The delivery and removal of materials and equipment as well as the sound of motors and generators and manoeuvring cranes will be audible and may cause some nuisance. The dismantling of the platform over the canal may also cause some nuisance.
Due to the delivery of materials and machinery, Roetersstraat will be busier than normal. Traffic services will be present for large transport.
