In April, we will continue the work on buildings A, E and G and the re-landscaping of the outdoor areas. Below you will find details of the work and any inconvenience or nuisance it may cause.
The tower, the highest part of building A, is almost finished. All the façades are ready and the internal work assigned to the current contractor has been completed. Frames and cladding panels will be attached in the lower section, the podium and the passage between buildings A and B/C/D (the future hall). The last remnants of concrete will be removed here, once the floors have been mechanically swept to smooth and prepare them for the finish. Drilling out the remaining concrete may be quite a noisy operation.
On Saturday 18 April, the last section of the base of the crane will be removed from the basement of building B/C/ D. This will involve a certain amount of drilling and grinding. The work has been planned for the weekend to spare the occupants any inconvenience caused by noise and bad smells. We do not expect this work to inconvenience the surrounding areas. In early April, a start will also be made on fixing the temporary covers onto the roof of the podium, lecture halls and the passage. This temporary cover will protect the building from wind and rain until the new contractor can take over. You can find a weekly schedule for work on building A here. It is a provisional schedule and may change due to a variety of factors.
Move With the renovation completed, at the end of March some of the staff moved back to their workplace. The teaching rooms in this part of the building are also being used again. Some of the floors in the highest tower on building E are now ready for their new occupants. The CREED Lab will be the first to move in, in mid-April and May. It will be followed by the back office of the Student Service Desk, which will move into this renovated section.
Updating the climate control, electrics and data cables on the other floors of the E1 and E2 towers will be a priority over the next few months. Plastering and painting work is also taking place.
A mobile crane will sometimes be needed to remove rubble and deliver construction materials to building E2. We are scheduling this to take place on consecutive days to keep disruption to a minimum. There will also be additional goods traffic. A crane will be placed temporarily on the building site of building E on Wednesday 8 April. And last but not least, renovations will be carried out on the hall of building E. The work will start later this spring. We expect to complete renovations in the towers of building E by the start of the 2015/16 academic year. As most of the work will be carried out indoors we do not expect it to cause much inconvenience to occupants of the surrounding buildings.
The outdoor areas on the campus will be re-landscaped and underground work will be carried out on pipes and cables. The old paving will be replaced in line with a design made by Bureau Inside Outside. We will also create extra meeting areas. The white line patterns in the new paving will ensure that the different campus buildings are more effectively connected.
In April, the contractor will be re-landscaping Nieuwe Prinsengracht, alongside building G and on the Green Nose, the green area at the tip of Nieuwe Prinsengracht. This renovation means that there will be no teaching in building G. We do not expect to cause inconvenience to people using the building.
Diversions will be in place while the work is carried out. The diversions are marked on the maps of the campus. Traffic is usually diverted via Nieuwe Achtergracht. However, this route may on occasion be blocked off while the soil is being cleaned. If so, you will be diverted via CREA.
The work on Nieuwe Prinsengracht means that some bike stands are temporarily out of use. You can use the bike shed beneath building E, where there is plenty of space.
From March to December 2015, building G will be thoroughly refurbished in order to make it suitable for the psychology department of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The building will be fitted out in January and February 2016 and taken into use in March 2016.
Facility Services will start preparing the building for renovation during the first week of April. The next step is to remove the small amount of asbestos in this building before the contractor starts on the renovation work. The contractor will set up the building site behind building G in mid-April.
The area between buildings E, G and L will be busy with pedestrians, cyclists, suppliers and building traffic. The contractors will sometimes use traffic controllers to ensure everyone´s safety. Paths for pedestrians and cyclists will also be marked out in the area.
You can find a weekly schedule for work on buildings E and G and the outdoor area here. It is a provisional schedule and may change due to a variety of factors.
