Unfortunately, the work on building A is causing more noise affecting buildings B/C/D than we had expected. Below we explain why and what we are doing to create a workable situation for all parties.
Before the building work started, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) agreed arrangements with the contractor to minimise the nuisance that the works would cause for local residents and campus users and to plan the timing of works likely to cause a nuisance. Unfortunately, the UvA and the contractor have a difference of opinion on how the works in building A should be carried out. It has therefore been decided to have the remaining work carried out by another contractor. The means that the current contractor will be finished in July and the planned works will be carried out at an accelerated pace. Parts of this work will involve additional noise.
To ensure that lecturers and students do not suffer from the noise, we are working with the faculties and the Teaching Logistics Office to see whether it is possible to relocate certain teaching activities on a temporary basis. More news on this will be provided as soon as possible.
This is unfortunately not possible, because the UvA also has to take other stakeholders into account when planning restrictions on building noise, for example local residents. We also have an agreement with the municipality about start times of noisy work.
New contractor for the second phase of the renovation The work on building A is split into two phases. The current contractor is working on phase 1:
The tender process for the second phase started in January. It is expected that the new contractor will start work in February 2016. Because the work in this phase will largely be on the interior of the building, we expect the noise to reduce significantly.
The new contract will start work in August, but will not be able to start the
actual renovation work immediately. Before work can start, there is first a
verification phase which the new contractor uses to discuss and optimise the
contract documentation with all those responsible for the design.
The verification phase starts in August 2015 and is expected to last until the end of January 2016. The new contractor will start the actual works in February 2016.
In the meantime, we will be carrying out the following work:
We will similarly make efforts to minimise any inconvenience caused by these works. The details have to be hammered out. Once we know more details, we will inform you accordingly.
