located in the Oudemanhuispoort
There are two possible scenarios for the new library. Scenario A on the Binnengasthuis site, in the former convent and the second surgical clinic, and scenario B is located in the Oudemanhuispoort. Here you will read more information about scenario B
Scenario B combines the University Library and the teaching in a single complex, creating the central heart of the campus as a result. This scenario is characterised by the main entrance via the historic passage from the Oudemanhuispoort and the courtyard. With a new forecourt on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, the library will create an extra connection with the city. A second entrance and the access to the bicycle basement are located here.
The square building will be the main focus of the Oudemanhuispoort development. The characteristic gallery, roof and high rooms will be continued in the new part of the building. This creates a natural connection between the old and the new.
The structure of the open courtyard is repeated in the covered central hall. This hall provides access to all the functions of the building: the library, offices, café, lecture rooms and bicycle basement. The hall also features floating floors and a large staircase. Students can study on the floating floors and the large staircase will serve as a gallery during lectures.
The repetition of the square structure will create a clear layout, allowing visitors to easily find their way and wander happily among the books. The strategic placement of the lifts and staircases will ensure that all the rooms are easy to access.
Next to the high windows, various study areas are dotted around the building. Students can work in peace here, but there is also room for discussion and meetings. Together with the monumental structure and the view of the courtyards, this lends the library its identity.
